Break-even ROAS is the minimum return on ad spend required for your advertising to cover the costs included in your profitability calculation.
At break-even, you are neither making nor losing money under the assumptions entered into the calculator. A ROAS above break-even leaves room for profit, while a ROAS below break-even indicates that the advertising is not covering the included costs.
The standard margin-based formula is:
Break-Even ROAS = 1 ÷ Contribution Margin
For example, if 40% of your sales value remains after relevant costs before advertising, the margin-based break-even ROAS is 2.50x.
However, your actual break-even calculation can depend on which costs are included. Our calculator lets you enter product/service costs, other associated costs, ad spend, agency fees and sales value so you can evaluate profitability using your own numbers rather than a generic benchmark.
A 4x ROAS can be profitable for one business and unprofitable for another because margins and costs differ. The more useful question is:
Is my ROAS comfortably above my break-even ROAS?
For example, a business with a 20% margin may need a much higher ROAS to break even than a business with a 50% margin.
Yes.
ROAS measures revenue generated compared with advertising spend; it does not automatically account for product costs, service delivery costs, fees, agency charges or other expenses.
For example, a campaign can report a 5x ROAS while still producing little or no profit if the business has high underlying costs.
That is why ROAS should be compared with your break-even ROAS, not judged on its own.
Include the costs that materially affect the profitability of the sales being evaluated.
Depending on your business, this can include:
- Product or service costs
- Shipping and fulfilment
- Payment or transaction fees
- Marketplace/platform fees
- Other associated costs
- Advertising spend
- Agency or ad-management fees
- Returns, refunds or other relevant costs
The exact costs should match the profitability model you're trying to measure. Current calculators commonly emphasize including costs such as product cost, shipping, payment fees, fulfilment and other variable expenses.
Current ROAS tells you how much revenue your advertising generated relative to ad spend.
Break-Even ROAS tells you the ROAS threshold required to cover the costs included in your calculation.
The important comparison is:
Current ROAS > Break-Even ROAS → profitability above the modeled break-even point
Current ROAS = Break-Even ROAS → approximately break-even
Current ROAS < Break-Even ROAS → below break-even
This comparison gives your ROAS number much more business context.
Break-even ROAS is the floor. Target ROAS is the goal.
Break-even tells you the minimum return needed to avoid a loss under your assumptions. Your target ROAS should generally be higher if you want additional profit, overhead coverage or room for performance fluctuations.
For example, if your break-even ROAS is 2.5x, setting your target at 2.5x gives you no additional profitability buffer. A higher target may be appropriate depending on your business economics and growth objectives.
Don't judge Google Ads profitability from ROAS alone.
Enter your sales, relevant business costs, advertising spend and applicable fees into the calculator, then compare your Current ROAS with your Break-Even ROAS.
For example:
Current ROAS: 6.00x
Break-Even ROAS: 4.50x
ROAS Above Break-Even: +1.50x
This means the reported ROAS is above the modeled break-even threshold. The actual business result still depends on the accuracy and completeness of the numbers entered.
The same profitability principle can be applied to Meta Ads, including Facebook and Instagram advertising.
Meta Ads ROAS tells you the revenue attributed to your advertising relative to ad spend. To determine whether that return is profitable, compare it with a break-even ROAS based on your actual costs.
This is especially important for ecommerce campaigns where product costs, fulfilment, payment fees and other expenses can substantially reduce the amount left after an ad sale.
ROAS measures advertising revenue efficiency. ROI measures profitability relative to the broader investment.
In simple terms:
- ROAS: How much revenue did I generate from my ad spend?
- ROI: How much profit did I generate after considering the relevant costs?
A campaign can have a strong ROAS while producing poor or negative profitability when costs are high. That's why break-even analysis is useful for putting ROAS into a profitability context.
